It seems that the majority of shifter karts are equipped with the 50mm axle but if you are purchasing new, the 40mm is generally listed as an option. Could someone explain the difference between the two diameters to me in terms of handling characteristics and advise as to the correct size for a F.O.G. (Fat Old Guy) ? Thanks for any advice

50 MM is usually Stiffer. A 50 mm bearing cassette probably won't fit your kart if you have a 40mm now. Axles are usually hard (stiff less flex) medium & soft(more flex). A extended hub will make for a stiffer axle. I would start with a medium as the track will be green in the spring. What chassis do you have & how old is it? Changing axles dosen't take too long once you do it a few times.

Oh I forgot, handling wise on my chassis a stiffer axle or wider makes it slide through the corners and not hop. 10 other people may tell you wider & stiffer will give you more grip and on their kart it might. All it comes down to is testing and moving things so you have an idea what will happen when you make a change. as the track changes all day with heat & more rubber being put down. Rain set up: wide front, narrow rear, take out torsion bars. If running slicks air 'em up to 30 or more to crown the tires.

Thanks for the response Lance. The kart is a KGB Phoenix/CR80 and I think it's an '02 chassis but will need to check with the previous owner to be sure. 40mm rear axle and everything on the kart is SKM, brakes, hubs, bearing cassettes, etc. I can't wait for some practice days to see what kind of handling it will have with my "fatbutt" in the chair!! ;D
